An engraving in green-black line: a sperm whale in a grey hoodie fills a narrow Swiss vault lined with safe-deposit boxes, holding up one orange bitcoin disc in his flipper, inside an oval frame on cream bank-note paper.

The portrait the bank engraves of itself, drawn for the people who made their money on a chain

A whale in a hoodie, drawn like a banknote

A movement that set out to abolish the bank now buys the bank’s furniture, and we think that is the best subject an engraver has been handed in years. So we gave it a sitter, and drew him the way the bank drew its own: every tone a line, one green-black ink, and one orange coin as the only colour. The Whale sits for ten pictures in the rooms money builds for itself: the vault, the private bank, the superyacht, the marina at noon, the trading room at four in the morning.

Each picture is printed by our lab as a giclée on canvas, in an edition of twenty-five. When a copy sells, its number is struck on the ledger under the picture with its date, and never with a name. A refunded number is retired, not sold again.

The Genesis Canvas

A commission set from one date
The Genesis Block engraving with a plaque in its cartouche reading The Genesis Block, 17 December 2017, block 499,683, $19,250.

The day you bought, set in type

Choose a day. The empty cartouche under the picture is set with that date, the height of the first bitcoin block mined after midnight UTC, and that day’s closing price in dollars. The block comes from mempool.space and the close from the Coin Metrics daily file, so anyone standing in front of the canvas can check all three.

Pick 3 January 2009 and the plaque reads block 0, with no market price yet, because the price file’s first close is 18 July 2010. The proof shows your plaque at true size before you pay.
